by Anna Nagamine, Kitahara Azusa,
Banri Oniki and Hitomi Ogawa

Our survey in Shibuya: The responses from one hundred (100) "gyaru" girls.
Group N (no!): These girls display all the characteristics of "gyaru" fashion, but they deny being part of the "gyaru" trend. Group Y (yes!): These girls display all the characteristics of "gyaru" fashion, and admit to being part of the "gyaru" trend.
Group N: No members aged 14-16; significantly less % of members aged 20-22. 13% have fulltime jobs (as opposed to 0% for Group Y). Also, Group N members have different reading and shopping habits. Group Y: 56% believe they are or might be fashionable; as well, 56% admit to dressing like their friends. Also, 17% thinks that "gyaruo" (the male version of the "gyaru") are "dirty", and 17% more think them "scary"--responses that no members of Group N gave.
