A brief history of Compass

We believe that the Faculty of Policy Studies, Chuo University has the finest writing program in English in Japan, and that the work presented in Compass may serve as partial proof of that. (Compass does not, incidently, represent the "best" of the writing program: rather, it represent the interests and enthusiams of our students. In fact, the majority of essays in Compass were written by first- and second- year students).

Compass, as a print publication, was founded 1994 by Lee and Joel Friederich (sometime lecturers) as a literary magazine for FPS that would accept writing in English from across the program. Under Lee's and Joel's guidance and efforts, three issues of Compass were published: Compass vol. 1 (1994), during the academic year 1994-95; Compass vol. 2 (1995), during the academic year 1995-96; and Compass vol. 3 (1996), during the academic year 1996-97. Volumes 1 to 3 averaged over 200 pages each.

Compass was revived as online edition in 1998 by Thomas J. Haslam (sometime lecturer) with help from Michimoto Satoh (then student, now an FPS alumni). The years 1994-1996 comprise just a selection from the print editions, a sampling based less on quality than variety and what one person [TJH] was able to scan, edit, and reformat). The archive edition of Compass Online was finished in November 2000.

Michimoto SATOH [www.michimoto.com]:

The Internet may not be an almighty tool. But through the Internet, we can get much information and meet more various kinds of people than before. And, the Compass Internet version is one chance for you to express yourself to the world.

TJH [tjh@tsujiru.net]

One of the greatest pleasures in my life has been the three years I spent as a lecturer at the Faculty of Policy Studies, Chuo University. What I enjoyed most were the students; or rather, the constant conversation and interaction with perhaps the most interesting, enthusiatic, and intelligent collection of people I have met thus far.

I believe that readers of Compass can learn a great deal about Japan, its people and its future. I hope some readers enjoy the Archive Edition of Compass as much as I have enjoyed working with the writers.

Please note

This is the final version of Compass Online. It be will hosted, but no longer updated, by the webmaster @ tsujiru.net. (The new / final design is by M. Saleh E. G., both a professional web developer and a former student of TJH's from the United Arab Emirates. Thanks, Saleh!)
